EDC symposium to feature Florida?s secretary of commerce

OKALOOSA ISLAND ? The Okaloosa County Economic Development Council will host a roundtable symposium later this week to give business leaders a new perspective on economic development in Florida.

The symposium is scheduled from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Ramada Plaza Beach Resort on Okaloosa Island.

Gray Swoope, Florida?s secretary of commerce and president and CEO of Enterprise Florida, will be the keynote speaker. He will discuss of the objectives that Gov. Rick Scott has outlined in his job creation and diversification initiative.

?We try to bring someone in that can give the audience, which is mainly the business community, an update on current economic activities that can either relate to or impact our local economies here,? said Larry Sassano, president of the EDC.

Admission to the symposium is $20 and reservations for the event are due by the end of business Tuesday. Reservations can be made by calling 850-362-6467.

Other guest speakers at the symposium will include Rick Harper, director of the University of West Florida?s Office of Economic Development and Engagement, who will speak about the current and projected economic activities that impact the state.

Mark Bontrager, vice president of Space Florida, also will be on hand to discuss the aerospace and defense industries and the impact unmanned vehicles could have on them.

The EDC has been working with Space Florida to make sure the state is at the forefront of development of unmanned vehicles.

The EDC has held the roundtable symposiums for about 20 years. Past speakers have included former governors, lieutenant governors and the former president of the Federal Reserve.
