Philippines news: Social Aspect Of Video Gaming | Pinas.Net

MANILA, Philippines ? As I look back at memories of video gaming when I was a kid, I notice that while playing alone was fun, playing with someone else was usually more fun. I remember spending a lot of time playing the Family Computer growing up. Playing it with my brother was usually more fun than playing it alone, even if he was kicking my ass. I?m not saying that single player games aren?t as fun. In fact a lot of the best games around are single player ones like Skyrim. Single player games have their place in the video gaming world but there?s a huge demand out there for games that allow you to interact with other people.

Our social nature as human beings feeds our craving for interaction, something that continues to manifest itself even in the games we play. The social aspect of video gaming has gone from my brother and I playing the family computer together to a group of high school friends playing Counterstrike friends in the same internet caf? to playing NBA 2k12 with some random guy on the internet.

With today?s internet powered video games, being able to interact with millions or even billions of people worldwide runs the risk of being very impersonal. I still remember back when the Facebook game Farm Town was still popular, going to the market to hire someone to harvest your crops seemed like a mostly impersonal thing where they come in and do what they have to do and leave without any or much conversation. Even in World of Warcraft, the dungeon finder that puts random people together to tackle the game?s dungeons often results in the group finishing without even a hello.

Of course there?s a lot of good that can come from online gaming. What online gaming does is give you the opportunity to interact with other people. It?s up to you make use of such opportunity. I?ve read a lot of stories about World of Warcraft being a means for family and friends to bond and keep in touch especially when they are apart. ?As I have mentioned in a previous article, I have met a lot of awesome people from the US and Australia by playing World of Warcraft who are still my friends up to now. If ever I fly to Australia one day, a trip to Queensland would definitely be in the plans since I know I?ll have friends there. In fact it was my Australian friend who got me to download the Scrabble-like Smartphone game Words With Friends just recently, which I have yet to try playing.

Speaking of social interactions and Words With Friends, the same Australian friend pointed me to a story that sparked the idea for this article. An Australian man probably wouldn?t be alive today if not for the game. He was playing a random game with a woman from Missouri, USA when he started complaining about chest pains through the game?s chat functions. The woman mentioned this to her doctor husband who recognized the symptoms right away and recommended that he go to the hospital immediately. It turned out he had a 99% blockage near the heart.

It?s amazing how the social aspect of gaming has allowed random people all over the world to meet and interact and create opportunities for amazing things to happen. It could forge friendships; bring people closer and even save your life. Of course, if nothing else, it?s there to keep you from being bored to death.
