Dyslexia isn't a matter of IQ, brain imaging study shows

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2011) ? About 5 to 10 percent of American children are diagnosed as dyslexic. Historically, the label has been assigned to kids who are bright, even verbally articulate, but who struggle with reading -- in short, whose high IQs mismatch their low reading scores. When children are not as bright, however, their reading troubles have been chalked up to their general intellectual limitations.

Now a new brain-imaging study challenges this understanding of dyslexia. "We found that children who are poor readers have the same brain difficulty in processing the sounds of language whether they have a high or low IQ," says Massachusetts Institute of Technology neuroscientist John D. E. Gabrieli, who worked on the study with Fumiko Hoeft, Hiroko Tanaka, Jessica M. Black, Leanne M. Stanley, Shelli R. Kesler, and Allan L. Reiss of the Stanford University School of Medicine; Charles Hulme at York University in the UK; and Susan Whitfield-Gabrieli, also at MIT. "Reading difficulty is independent of other cognitive abilities."

The findings, which will be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science, could change the ways educators help all poor readers.

The study involved 131 children, about 7 to 17 years old. According to a simple reading test and an IQ measure, each child was assigned to one of three groups -- typical readers with typical IQs; poor readers with typical IQs; and poor readers with low IQs. All were shown word pairs and asked whether they rhymed. Spellings didn't indicate sound similarities. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, the researchers observed the activity in six brain regions important in connecting print and sound.

The results: Poor readers in both IQ groups showed significantly less brain activity in the observed areas than typical readers. But there was no difference in the brains of the poor readers, regardless of their IQs. "These findings suggest the specific reading problem is the same whether or not you have strong cognitive abilities across the board," says Gabrieli.

The study could have an important impact on both the diagnosis and education of poor readers. The revised definition of dyslexia proposed for the upcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V), psychiatry's diagnostic bible, "currently lacks neurobiological evidence for the removal of 'severe discrepancy' [between IQ and reading ability]," says Stanford's Fumiko Hoeft. "Our study will be the first to provide such evidence."

Meanwhile, educators commonly offer reading- and language-focused interventions to bright dyslexics, to bring their reading up to the level of their expected achievement. But they may consider such specific remediation futile for less-"smart" children. If teachers understand that the same thing is going on in the brains of all poor readers, they may see that all those children could benefit from the same interventions. Since it's hard to learn much if you can't read, that's good news for a lot of kids.

Childlessness May Increase Men's Heart Disease Risk

Men who don't have children may be at increased risk of dying from heart disease, a new study says.

Childless men in the study had a 17 percent higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease than fathers, the researchers said. Only married men were included in the study.

The results suggest infertility might be a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease, said study researcher Dr. Michael Eisenberg, an assistant professor of urology at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

Low testosterone levels, which may contribute to infertility, are a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and may be what's driving this link, the researchers said.

However, it's also possible that something about being a father protects against cardiovascular disease.

"Maybe having children causes men to have healthier behaviors, so fathers will live longer," Eisenberg said.

Fertility and heart disease

Eisenberg and colleagues analyzed questionnaires completed by about 135,000 members of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). All men were over the age of 50 at the start of the 10-year study, and did not have a history of heart disease, stroke or conditions that could interfere with reproduction. The researchers said they tried to include only men who had the intent and opportunity to reproduce by limiting their study to married or formerly married men.

Ninety-two percent of participants were fathers; the average number of children was 2.6.

Between 1995 and 2005, 10 percent of participants died.

Childless men were more likely to die of any cause than were fathers, but this increased risk of death was almost entirely due to death from cardiovascular disease, the study showed.

Men with one child also had an increased risk of death. As a group, childless men and men with one child were 13 percent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than men with two or more children.

The results held even after the researchers took into account factors that could affect risk of dying from heart disease, including body-mass index (BMI), activity level, tobacco and alcohol use, income and education.

Other factors

"It certainly is an intriguing [finding]," said Dr. Stephen Kopecky, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., who was not involved in the study. The results are in line with those of earlier studies that linked erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular disease.

However, the new study cannot explain why childlessness and heart disease are linked, Kopecky said.

Although infertility is suggested as a reason for the link, the number of children is not a direct marker of fertility, the researchers noted.

Kopecky said he would like to see further work this topic. Studies that use large databases instead of self- reports, or research that analyzes hormone levels might tell us more about this link, he said.

If infertility is indeed linked to cardiovascular disease, researchers may have another way to screen for the condition.

"As a man's fertility potential is often known in early life, our work suggests that the fatherhood status may provide insight into a man's risk of cardiovascular disease and death later in his life," the researchers wrote in the Sept. 26 issue of the journal Human Reproduction.

Note: For even moister and more flavorful cakes, pour either wine or brandy, not both, over the cakes before wrapping them in cloth or aluminum foil for storage, or for best results, wrap them in cloths that have been dampened with either wine or brandy. Also, for optimal taste, make the cakes at least three or four weeks in advance of when they will be needed, although you can store them in the freezer for longer periods of time. Also note: You can store the cakes in the freezer if you are making them well in advance of when they will be needed.

Recipe for Fruitcake with Coconut, Almonds, and Pecans

This recipe makes two loaf fruitcakes. Moreover, the cake is a bit nontraditional in that the recipe calls for coconut, but if you like coconut, you?ll be pleased with the results. Then again, it?s also loaded with nuts and other ?goodies,? so there?s something to please everyone?s palate.

• 3/4 cup shortening
• 2/3 cup orange juice (I prefer the high-pulp type)
• 3/4 teaspoon salt
• 3 cups golden raisins
• 2 and 1/2 cups halved candied cherries
• 2 cups cut-up candied pineapple
• 2/3 cup candied citron, cut up
• 2/3 cup candied orange peel, cut up
• 1 and 1/2 cups whole almonds, blanched
• 3/4 cup flaked coconut
• 2 cups pecan halves

Preparation:

1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees.
2. Line 2 pans (9x5x3 inches) with aluminum foil.
3. Grease the foil.
4. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, shortening, margarine or butter, orange juice, and eggs.
5. Beat on low for 30 seconds, scraping bowl continually.
6. Change to high speed and beat for 3 minutes.
7. Place fruits and nuts in a separate large mixing bowl.
8. Add batter to nuts and fruits.
9. Blend well.
10. Pour into pans, spreading batter evenly.
11. Bake 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours, or until inserted toothpick comes out clean. (Cover with aluminum foil during last hour of baking to prevent over-browning)
12. Remove from oven, allow to cool for about 30 minutes, wrap, and store in refrigerator.

Reminder, if you are adding brandy or wine to the cakes, either pour the liquid directly over the cakes before wrapping or else wrap them in cloths dampened with your choice of liquor. However, if pouring wine or brandy over the cakes, don?t overdo the liquor, or you just might make folks tipsy.

Netflix to separate its DVD, streaming businesses (AP)

NEW YORK ? Netflix Inc. plans to separate its DVD-by-mail service and streaming video businesses.

Netflix has been under scrutiny since July, when it announced it was raising prices and separating its DVD and streaming services into two separate payment plans. Netflix previously bundled both options into a single package.

CEO Reed Hastings said on Sunday in a blog posting that the DVD service will be called Qwikster while the streaming business will be housed under the Netflix name.

Hastings says the DVD service will be the same as ever, "just a new name." But customers will see a video games upgrade option for game rentals on the Qwikster website.

Hastings said it will add "substantial" streaming content in the next few months, and reassured that there are no pricing changes.

Floating Maldives ? Excitement, speed key to air racing

(CNN) ? Crashes had whittled the expected field from 22 to five, with wreckage from at least a dozen aircraft at one point strewn about the French airfield.

But it did not deter between 300,000 to 500,000 from flocking to the Betheny Plain outside Reims for the final event, drawn by the rush of seeing planes turn, twist and race through the air ? and not deterred by the evident risk.

That account, from the US Centennial of Flight Commission, was from 1909. More than 100 years later, air shows ? which may include air races ? continue to draw millions. In the process, they generate $110 million annually in the US and Canada alone, according to John Cudahy, president of the International Council of Air Shows.

A spike this year in fatalities at such events has raised fresh questions about safety. But it has not detracted from the enthusiasm of many aviation enthusiasts, who still view such races as enthralling competitions.

Its exciting, its incredibly moving to see these airplanes do what they do and handle the way they are, said aviation analyst Jim Tilmon, himself a former pilot in the US military and with American Airlines, who then compared it to its risks and thrills with auto racing and other sports.

Such danger was apparent Friday, when pilot Jimmy Leewards P-51 aircraft plunged into spectators during a qualifying run at the National Championship Air Races and Air Show outside Reno, Nevada. Nine people ? including the pilot ? were killed, with many more injured.

A day later, US Air National Guard Lt. Nate Nueller said an aircraft crashed at a show in Martinsburg, West Virginia, killing the pilot. Cudahy noted there had been at least 13 deaths at US air shows this year ? after none for 2009 and 2010.

Mike Cummings, crew chief for the Blue Thunder racing team, watched Leewards World War II-era plane fly over his head, invert, go into a loop, then slam into the ground. He called the crash very traumatic (for) the very close-knit air racing community, be they people such as himself who knew Leeward personally or other enthusiasts worldwide of the sport.

Still, he said it would not deter him from continuing to participate. Nor would he hesitate to bring family members, as he has done often in the past, to watch planes race.

(My kids) love the air races, said Cummings. They realize its dangerous, that its not a Sunday afternoon in the park.

Air races are sometimes a part of, but distinct from, air shows, which generally are exhibitions in which pilots demonstrate aerobatics and other aerial moves.

In a race, pilots compete against one another to see who can go fastest. There are several forms, the most high-profile being the Red Bull Air Race circuit in which competitors race against a clock and do aerobatic maneuvers, before being compared. Its pilots come from around the world ? Japan, Brazil, England and beyond ? oft competing in picturesque locales in front of hundreds of thousands of people, including well over 1 million recently in Dubai.

The Reno race, by contrast, was a lap race. Competitors, typically five to eight at a time, fly a predetermined number of laps in large ovals that range from 3 to 8 miles, depending on the type of plane.

And the fledgling Sky Challenge racing circuit is a head-to-head race that melds the two concepts while adding various safety measures. CEO Peter Newport said he is currently criss-crossing the globe for meetings to set up future events.

Whatever the air race form, Newport said the common challenge is balancing the desire to maximize both excitement and safety. The latter becomes a bigger challenge than with conventional aircraft, since the pilots ? however well-trained ? are trying to push their planes to the limits.

Those involved in such events point out the numerous safety checks in place. Only 320 pilots, for instance, are certified to fly in air shows, much less air races, said Cudahy.

And the Federal Aviation Administration notes that its employees closely examine a race course, monitor pilots practice runs, examine their and their planes safety records and observe the races themselves. This is all in addition to pre-race inspections of the aircraft.

Still, as authorities learned again Friday, there are limits to what can be done when pilots are trying to get the most from their aircraft ? especially if theres an unanticipated mechanical failure.

An air race is a very, very high-speed race close to the ground with aircraft that have been modified to fly much faster than were originally designed to fly, Tilmon said. You can call this an extreme sport (because the plane and pilot) are being pushed to the absolute edge.

Newport, for one, believes that new technology can make such events safer without losing any of the sports luster ? something, he said, is needed to encourage more young people to go into aviation. And he thinks that, once the safety questions are answered, air racing should grow even more popular and take its place among conventional sports like baseball, soccer, golf and the like.

I think air racing will be the worlds predominant sport in 10 years time, said Newport, anticipating it could be a huge spectator and revenue draw without heavy expenses such as building stadiums. The challenge is (balancing) excitement and safety? Unless you achieve those two things, its hard to see how it becomes a global sport.

"Boardwalk Empire" brings Martin Scorsese an Emmy (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? He is one of the greatest American film directors working, but on Sunday night it was the world of U.S. television that Martin Scorsese ruled over, winning an Emmy for directing drama "Boardwalk Empire."

The pilot episode of the series, which is set in 1930s Prohibition-era Atlantic City at a time when mob bosses ruled that seaside town, was directed by Scorsese, and if he had his way, the maker of "GoodFellas" and "Raging Bull" said he'd like to direct more.

""I've always dreamed of working on a project where the characters can develop over a period of time," Scorsese told reporters backstage at the Emmys. "You can develop plot, characters ... and get more done over a longer period of time. It gives you more license and much more freedom."

Scorsese, 68, had been nominated for Oscars, the film industry's top honors, seven times before finally winning for directing his 2006 hit "The Departed."

Yet even though he plays at the top of his game in film, he said it was nerve-racking sitting in the Emmy audience and waiting to see if his name would be called.

"I was extremely nervous," he said. "I must say it is something I never dreamed of. It's a different medium, although we approach 'Boardwalk Empire' as a film, a very long film. It's just as exciting."

He told reporters that the type of television dramas being made now on cable TV networks such as HBO, where "Boardwalk Empires" airs, were of a quality that directors like Scorsese had longed for back in the 1960s but failed to materialize on broadcast networks looking for the widest possible audiences.

"You have the opportunity here now. You can do something really extraordinary now. This is the time," he said.

Other Scorsese films include "Mean Streets," "Taxi Driver," "The Color of Money," "Casino," "The Aviator" and "Gangs of New York." He also has directed documentary films. His new nonfiction feature, "George Harrison: Living in the Material World," will premiere on HBO in October.

When Will was 2 and just being diagnosed I cringed at the idea of telling people he had autism; I hated just saying the word. I sunk inside myself and my marriage fell apart. Badly. I prayed no one noticed, but everyone did and it was hard not to when Emma was so smiley and chatty and walking and Will? wasn?t.

?

But now almost 3 years since he was diagnosed, it?s life and it does go on, and happily, I might add.

?

Will has autism, but autism does not have Will.

?

There are certainly days where it?s completely obvious to anyone observing my family that Will is ?different? and there are very rare days when anyone believes me when I say he and his sister are twins. Emma is not only a completely ?normal? 4 1/2 year old little girl, but she is actually above average in speech and quite possibly the bossiest little girl I have ever known ;)

?

Will, on the other hand, is very delayed in his speech & development and tends to spend time ?playing? by himself (if we let him), but he is also the happiest child I have ever seen. There is seriously not a single thing in this world that makes him unhappy, aside from us singing ?Happy Birthday? (don?t ask! I have NO clue.).

?

I used to be afraid of his diagnosis.

?

I thought it would consume me and our family.

?

I thought it would take away from his relationship with his sister.

?

Instead, his diagnosis has given me a better understanding of unconditional love and it has saved my family, saved my marriage and brought me closer to my faith.

?

And, as for his sister, she is his protector.

?

She is his biggest fan,

?

and he is her ?birthday twin?,

?

her Will.

The Season 2 At-Home Winner Will Encourage Genesee County Residents to ?Get Moving? at County-wide Fitness Challenge Kick-off Event September 12, 2011!

Ann Arbor, MI? Pete Thomas, the Season 2 At-Home Winner of NBC?s ?The Biggest Loser,? is putting all Genesee County residents on notice:? ?Get ready to MOVE!?? On Monday, September 12, 2011, Thomas will rally the troops and lead Genesee County residents in a corporate physical activity challenge during the Commit to Fit! kick off event.? The event takes place from 12 Noon ? 1:00 pm at Kearsley Street Flat Lot in Downtown Flint.

Pete Thomas will join City of Flint Mayor Dayne Walling, the President & CEO of HealthPlus, Bruce Hill, and Kirk Smith, the President and CEO of the Greater Flint Health Coalition, in launching the Commit to Fit! Fall 4 Fitness Challenge ?a four week community-wide business-to-business challenge that runs from September 12 ?October 7.

During the kick-off event, Pete Thomas will encourage the 30+ participating businesses and organizations, and facilitate the Corporate Physical Activity Challenge consisting of push-ups, squats and an obstacle course.? Three local fitness organizations ?Genesys Athletic Center, Hurley Health and Fitness Center and the U of M Flint Recreation Center will lead the three competitions.? Thomas will announce the winners upon completion of the challenges.

Thomas expressed his enthusiasm for the Challenge and looks forward to being a part of this unique initiative.? ?The Fall 4 Fitness county-wide business-to-business challenge is a great concept,? Thomas shares.? ?Weight-loss and wellness are best achieved and sustained in a team environment.? Each participating business is a team, and ultimately?the 30+ businesses collectively are a team.? Each Fall 4 Fitness Challenge participant is encouraged to reach the goal of 30 minutes a day.
